Ethnic Georgians
Environmental Bio-Engineers
(So that’s how Pavel knew about quadrotriticali...)
Kids: Viktor, Natalya and Andrie
Father
Andrie Nikolaievich Chekov
Stands 5'6". Black, curly, unkempt hair he has pulled back in a short braid. Grows Russian
mustache and trimmed beard after Pavel is born. (Maria tells him he needs to look older.) Brown
eyes. Very athletic body. Has only slight accent. Speaks many languages, but primarily Georgian
and Russian. Small scar on left temple. Gold hoop earring in left ear. Tattoo on left front
shoulder. Wears a off-white Russian peasant shirt, worn brown trousers and old boots whenever
he can get away with it. In public, Maria makes sure he’s wearing a Admiral’s navy uniform. (He
can’t put on or take off the coat himself: way too complicated for him to bother with. Has been
known to rip the buttons off when left to his own devices.)
Is charming, charasmatic and smiles easily.
Quiet pacifist that has never been heard to raise his voice: appears to have no temper. He is a
man of infinite patience who is none the less passionate about his beliefs and unwavering in both
his decisions and goals. Is generally thought to be rude by politicians because of his forthright
manner and unwavering conviction to speak his mind. Since he is not afraid to stand up to people
he usually gets his way. Refuses to directly tell anyone what to do. He is a deep philospher and
has a profound wisdom about people and the basic priorities in life that seem to escape most
people. Listens to people so intently it can be unnerving.
Believes parents that state they are proud of their children are taking credit where it isn’t due.
Instead, says ‘you should be proud of yourself.’
Has learning disability–commonly refered to as “Einstien Syndrome” or ‘Absent minded
professor’. He’s so busy thinking he forgets to do things: like go to school, eat, get dressed, Etc.
Can not interface with computers and most technology.
Loves children and attracts them wherever he goes.
Has photographic memory: both visual and auditory, can immediately parrot back what is said to
him, including inflections and body language.
Has natural ability with music, dance and language. Has a tenor voice.
Plays balalyka, guitar, violin, concertina, accordian, banjo and all simple folk instruments. (Bones,
spoons, etc.)
Expert tap and ballroom dancer. Is known to break into a tap dance anywhere and anywhen the
mood strikes him. (Polished floors are irresistible.)
Is fascinated by the sea, folk and oral history.
Is either a Orthodox Deacon or Priest.
12-quits school and runs away to live in peasant village, taken in by Sergie Ivanovich and put in
village manor house by villagers. Father disowns him, but does check to see he’s okay. Spends his
time collecting and sharing oral history and music. “Nelzya”
14-starts to stalk 20 year old, engaged Maria.
18-marries Maria, founds New Imperial Russian Navy (NIRN). Restores “Syvetlana” and renames
his flagship ‘Nelzya’ (means ‘it isn’t done’ or ‘it’s taboo’, which is what people told him when he said
he was going to refound the sailing navy). Arranges to restore all remaining tall ships on Earth:
NIRN provides men, country which owns ship supplies materials and funds. NIRN trains local men
to be sailors.
19-Pavel is born.
20-Stands in front of Starfleet personnel attempting to clear out the peasant villages. Recieves
scar on his right temple from being repeated knocked down by Captain. Wins and founds Russian
National Historic Districts.
24-Brings Pavel to meet Mikhail Leonov because the boy wants to enter Starfleet. Says he’s “ill-
equipped to assist him in this dream”. (Mikhail says it’s the most courageous act he’s ever seen)
“Relative Discord”
30-Orders Pavel to redirect his entire salary among the crew of the Nelzya when the
government refuses to give them raises. “Borzoi Puppies”
39-Runs away to Enterprise and refuses to go back to Russia until they take down the statue of
him they put up in front of the Admiralty. Has won several Nobel Prizes as well as others, but
refuses to accept them. Is mortified by the recognition.
Maternal Grandparents
Mikhail Petrovich and Vera Iosifovna Leonov
Ethnic Great Russians
Direct descents of first man who walked in space and one of men who founded Starfleet.
Starfleet officers
Kids: Grigory, Lidiya, Cyril and Maria
Mother
Maria Mikholova Leonov
Pretty woman with pale green eyes, straight brown hair like Pavel: wears it up. 5'4", very trim
and athletic. She is six years Andrie’s senior. She wears a male sailor’s uniform usually:
sometimes wears traditional Russian clothing.
Former concert pianist, ballet dancer and music teacher. Never could settle on a career.
Lost teaching license due to unorthodox teaching methods: had 16 year old Andrie helping her
teach in exchange for helping him with his folk and sea research. Feeds him as he forgets to eat
Expert tap and ballroom dancer.
Quick tempered and stubborn, is known for getting in shouting matches with Pavel. She smiles
easily and laughs often. Her grace and charm win people over quickly.
Has natural abilities in music, dance and language. Speaks many languages, but Georgian isn’t one
of them. Accomplished pianist, harpist and plays the accordian, concertina and all simple folk
instruments.
Teaches the crew of the Nelzya daily. Has taught illiterate sailors to read. Teaches and
oversees Pavel’s education.
20-realizes Andrie is stalking her. Although she scolds him, is known to watch for him to appear
before she leaves the house.
Maria thought Andrie was a lunatic when she met him. Claims she is even more convinced of this
now.
24-marries starfleet officer, but during reception runs off with Andrie at new husband’s
suggestion. (The man doesn’t dance!) (Claims it was easier to marry him than to get a restraining
order)
They say they married at a village church after annulment, but Pavel claims that they never
bothered–have simply been having a 25 yr+ affair. Father disowns her when she leaves.
Maria continues to send both sets of parents update letters, but receives no responses.
Maria makes first set of Navy uniforms for all the sailors and Andrie while they are learning how
to sail the ship.
Andrie and Maria travel with the Nelzya’s sailors, collecting and teaching folk culture
and maritime history. They have performed at the White House, etc.
They travel by sailing ship all summer, home from harvest to planting except for short
trips.
They live with the sailors, in the village manor house, where they live during the winter
months. While on land, most sailors spend weekends at their own homes. Most of them
are married with children. All but four are older than both Andrie and Maria. They
attend church as a group on land. Andrie performs services while at sea. (For more info
on the sailors and the Navy, see separate web page.)
Pavel Andrieivich Chekov
Pre-Birth
While Maria is pregnant, Andrie ‘chats’ with and tells stories (in Georgian) to Pavel every night
while she sleeps.
Birth
Pavel born Aug 16–6 weeks early. Born at sea during a hurricane.
Maria claims he couldn’t wait to meet Andrie.
Pavel claims it was the only hope he had of getting Andrie to shut up.
Andrie says it was Pavel’s way of announcing he wasn’t taking any shit from the world.
Due to circumstances, Dr. informs Maria if he saves the baby, she won’t have any more kids.
Maria says if God wants her son back so soon, he must be special and chooses one child over
many. Pavel sends Mama present and thank-you card every year on his birthday.
Andrie names him Dimitri Ivanovich, after Russia’s first hero. In first disagreement, Maria
claims the name is pretentious. Sergie Ivanovich, named Godfather, sees baby and instantly
renames him Pavel Andrievich: Pavel (Paul) means ‘little one’. Sergie claims he sees the same
stubborn shit already in the kid’s eyes as in his father’s. Andrie is ‘big one’, Pavel is ‘little one’.
Everyone immediately begins calling Pavel “Malyenki”, Russian for ‘little one.’ (Andrieivich is a
traditional patronymic: ‘son of Andrie’.
Maria secretly names Elena Chekov godmother. For some reason Andrie was not at ceremony
Pavel’s Orthodox ‘Name Day’ is July 29 (feast of St. Paul)
Pavel calls the men that work for his father his brothers. Thinks they really are for five yrs
Pavel travels with his parents and the sailors, later identifies them as ‘cultural anthropologists’
or ‘folklorists’ as their specialty. Picks up dozens of languages while traveling.
Excellent tap and ballroom dancer. Concert pianist. Plays guitar (left-handed), banjo, balalyka,
violin, concertina (Sergie taught him), accordian and all simply folk instruments.
Does not like performing on the piano. Composes under name “Dimitri Ivanovich”
Doesn’t like getting drunk. When he drinks even a little too much, he talks in his sleep–in
Georgian.
Has a thing for woman with great legs. (Particularly dancers)
Aged 1
Andrie claims Pavel’s first word is ‘star’ and that he’ll only stop fussing when he’s taken out to
gaze at the stars.
Throws his first major set of tantrums, screaming and kicking every time the sailors pick him up.
Andrie orders everyone to stop picking him up when he realizes the poor kid is just trying to walk
on his own.
Aged 2
Throws mother-of-all temper tantrum when he refuses to get dressed one day, claiming his
father is outfitting him effeminately. (Okay, he’s 2–he screams ‘no girls clothes!’) In first battle
of wills, Andrie insists he needs to be dressed to eat or leave his room–he stays in his room an
entire week. Of course, the sailors sneak him food and stop in to play with him. Andrie FINALLY
realizes Maria is the only one not in uniform: Pavel wants a navy uniform. (Maria starts wearing a
uniform now, too)
Aged 3
Secretly reveals to sailors–who reveal to Andrie–that he can imitate the man’s tap dancing.
Father and son become life-long dance partners.
Aged 4
Andrie keeps forgetting where he left his shoes at night, no matter how he tries to keep track.
Sulu reveals years later that Pavel was stealing and hiding them.
Pavel, who sleeps in an alcove off his parents room, graphically asks his father what his parents
are doing at night while they’re supposed to be sleeping. Horrified, Andrie immediately announces
that the kid is getting his own, seperate bedroom. In second disagreement, Maria objects, saying
he’s too young. Andrie relents, but insists on separate beds until Pavel moves: he gets his own
room immediately.
Pavel sees ‘Camelot’ for the first time, and starts life-long habit of calling Maria ‘Lady’ instead
of Mama.
Aged 5
Andrie sends Pavel and Maria home to live after kid witnesses a graphic, violent accident aboard
ship: having decided that a sailing ship is no place for a child. Pavel stays is Sergie’s bed an entire
week, sobbing, and heartbroken: thinking he’s being punished because he can’t be with his father
or ‘brothers’ any more.
Maria realizes Pavel thinks the sailors are his actual brothers. When she explains they are not,
Pavel states it’s the first time in his life he ever felt lonely–and he never got over it.
Pavel calls his Godfather ‘Old Man’, although he is actually only in his late 30's.
Andrie sends for Pavel and Maria to join them because he can’t stand being away from them and
Maria tells him Pavel thinks he’s being punished.
Andrie brings Pavel to meet Maria’s father and Pavel starts spending time around Starfleet.
Third disagreement, Maria wants professional piano teacher for Pavel. Andrie only relents when
he claims Maria is playing better than ever, only to realize she’s talking to him: not playing in the
next room.
Pavel is entered into first piano competition after current ‘Beethoven’ agrees to teach him.
Pavel whines for a pet doy. Andrie tells Pavel he will not get him a dog, as he feels all their
traveling would be unfair to animal. Sailor Misha gives him a Siberian Husky, Pavel names him
“Laika” (Barker–the name of the first animal sent to space–a dog.) Andrie admits defeat: he didn’
t buy the boy a dog, it was a present. Would be rude to send it away.
Aged 8
Piotir, a sailor Pavel is close to, commits suicide in front of him. He blocks all memory of him.
Pavel gets to travel on a starship with his Grandfather.
Government insists Pavel gets added to the Navy payroll, claiming it’s child slavery to do
otherwise. Pavel gets past pay deposited from day he was born: starts financial independence.
Andrie gives him a black laquer locket with an icon of St. Nicholas (patron saint of star
travelers), a picture of the Firebird (Pavel’s favorite story) and Russian earth inside. Always
wears it after this.
Pavel wins All-Terran Piano Competition. First award of many.
Pavel is caught in a compromising position with the daughter of a visiting Vulcan anthropologist.
Claims he was only doing "scientific research".
Aged 12
Government of Russian Federation refuses to raise salaries of sailors. At his father’s request,
Pavel secretly diverts Andrie’s salary and spreads it out among the sailors, thereby giving them
their raises.
Pavel becomes a topmen in the Navy.
First new sailor is hired since Nelzya set sail: Yuri, aged 15. Becomes Pavel’s best friend.
Aged 14
Pavel becomes obssessed with the idea that in the past all sailors had tatoos. Andrie tells him he
doesn’t want him to be the first sailor in NIRN to have a tattoo. Pavel talks Yuri into getting one
first: so Pavel is the 2nd person to get one. (On front of right shoulder, it’s a St. Andrew Navy
Flag–which all the other sailors, including Andrie, eventually copy) (Maria also has one, but I don’t
know where...)
Misha, Dimitri, Sasha, Viktor and Yuri bring Pavel out to celebrate his 14th birthday, declaring he’
s a ‘man’ now. Pay for favors for him at local brothel, which Pavel secretly refuses and gets a
lifelong reputation when he’s seen getting a refund. (He’s the only man who gets PAID for going
to a brothel!) Comes home in early am very drunk and throws up all over his father: who insists
the kid clean his clothes. Rather than scrub the shoes, he secretly buys new ones. Pavel later
finds out from Sulu that Andrie threw new ones out, not wanting to wear the ‘cleaned’ ones.
Nelzya’s foremast breaks during hurricane while Pavel is working on it as a Topman. He pulls four
fellow topman to safety, but is unable to rescue his best friend. 17 yr old Yuri becomes the first
NIRN casualty. Pavel becomes youngest person to ever recieve St. George’s cross(medal of
honor). Pavel is washed overboard in incident, but holds onto loose rigging until he is found next
morning. Claims he died during the night, but was saved by his Guardian Angel, Matthew, who held
him to the lines. When discovered in the morning and pulled back aboard, crew is not sure he’s
alive until Andrie grabs his motionless body and Pavel asks “Did I miss breakfast?” Becomes an
inside joke. Whole right side of his body is bruised and he has a serious concussion, which he
claims makes him feel like he has a hangover for weeks. (The real reason he doesn’t get drunk
anymore.) Parents and crew go to the re-launching of the “Amerigo Vespuci”, leaving the
recovering sailors and Pavel home. They answer a plea from Starfleet and Pavel meets Lt. Cmdr.
James Kirk.
Pavel is later excused from the Kobyashi Maru, as he already faced his test of character.
Aged 15
Pavel receives an appointment to the Command School at Starfleet Academy.(more than one–
refuses his grandfathers. Insists on not having any help.)
July 11: four weeks prior to 16th birthday, is attacked by shark who amputates his left leg
several inches below the knee. Refers to this as “a swimming accident” for the rest of his life.
Both sets of Grandparents show up at hospital: Leonov informs Andrie the Command School does
not accept cadets with artificial parts. Andrie insist they put Pavel’s leg back on, rather than
giving him a bionic replacement so that ‘he can decide for himself’ when he wakes up. Pavel dies
during surgery, but again claims ‘Matthew’ brought him back when God said he didn’t want him yet.
Pavel spends year at the Chapman Rehab Clinic and stubbornly forces himself to learn to walk
again, despite medical prognosis that it’s impossible. Pavel adds the shark took that was
imbedded in his leg to the chain on his locket.
Pavel meets Tatiana, a twelve year old ballerina from the Marinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, at
Clinic and tortures her until she fights back. She becomes the best friend he will ever have. (He
mispronounces her name as Ta-Tee-an-a, and calls her Tiana just to annoy her–forever.)
Pavel begins to compose, under name ‘Dimitri Ivanovich’, because he can’t play while at the clinic
(Sound vibrations of music cause him pain)
Aged 17
Enters Academy as fourth level cadet (freshman) and is assigned second level (junior)Sulu as his
‘big brother’ (mentor) and roommate.
Is accelerated in his studies because of home schooling and connections with Admiral Mikhail
Leonov–got him to pass some classes before entering. Takes extra courses at UCSF to fill his
time and ends up with a degree in history and education, as well as his Command School education.
Drags Sulu home for Thanksgiving break. He grew up on Space Station and has no relatives on
Earth to spend holiday with–Pavel insists he won’t live with Ebeneezer Scrooge.
Andrie meets Sulu and announces ‘when I told Pavel he couldn’t have a kitten, I didn’t realize he’d
start dragging home stray PEOPLE instead’. Starts calling Sulu “Koshka” (kitten), a permanent
nickname Pavel and the entire village picks up. Sulu begins lifelong friendship with both Pavel and
Andrie, who helps him understand his own father and make amends with him.
Tatiana shows up at Academy during finals, dying, and Pavel risks expulsion to bring her home to
live with his parents. Pavel marries the fourteen year old to quickly assume guardianship of her
at this time: she was previously ward of Marinisky Theater after death of her father. He moves
her in with his parents to take care of her, where she remains.
Pavel is allowed to remain at the Academy because he was willing to give up his career for a
friend.
Aged 21
Pavel recieves commission and is posted to Enterprise.
Aged 22
Promoted to Chief Navigator when he saves the ship during a storm, during which former Chief
Navigator dies. First Ensign to be given Dept Head post.

Aged 34
Third son, Sergie Pavolich is born.
Aged 36
Twins born. Son, Yuri Pavolich, Daughter, Tanya Pavolena.

Before “Generations" is promoted to Captain. (While still in the uniform of a Commander, the
reproters present call him "Captain") Recieves command of Enterprise-A when Kirk finally
retires after treaty with Klingons. Ship assumes post assisting Klingons, which Kirk isn’t happy
about.
Finally uses his family connections to get Starfleet to refrain from decommisioning Kirk's ship
and toallow officer’s wives and families to travel aboard deep space ships. (# of willing
candidates is going down and he points out this was the navy’s solution in ancient history.) Tatiana
and children move aboard refitted Enterprise.
